Porosity is how easily your hair takes in water and product, and how well it holds onto them once they are in. One rule of thumb runs underneath the whole table: virgin hair skews lower porosity, and damage raises it. Bleach, color, heat, and years of wear all lift and erode the cuticle, which is why porosity is less a fixed trait than a running score of what your hair has been through.

Why the float test misleads

The float test is a noisy, easily fooled proxy for porosity, not a reliable measure of it. A strand floats or sinks based on how water-repellent its surface is, which is related to porosity but thrown off by oils, residue, water temperature, and which strand you happen to pull.

Medium and mixed hair: the most common case
